Introducing one new food every day to your baby can be an exciting way to expand their palate and expose them to a variety of tastes and textures. However, when practicing baby-led weaning (BLW), it’s important to approach this with care, especially when it comes to potential allergens and ensuring your baby can tolerate the new foods.
Key Considerations for Introducing New Foods Daily
1. Watch for Allergies:
• It’s generally recommended to introduce one common allergen at a time such as eggs, peanuts, or wheat. This allows you to monitor your baby for any allergic reactions, which might include symptoms like rashes, vomiting, diarrhea, or difficulty breathing.
• If your baby has a family history of food allergies, it might be best to introduce new foods more slowly and consult with your pediatrician beforehand.
• When introducing a new allergen to your child, it’s important not to offer any other new foods (allergen or not) on the same day. Stick to foods that have already been safely introduced in the past. This approach helps you clearly identify any potential reactions to the new allergen and ensures your child’s safety.
2. Focus on Variety:
Introducing a variety of foods early on can help your baby develop a taste for different flavors and textures. If your baby tolerates new foods well, you can offer a new food each day, but ensure that you also continue to offer previously introduced foods. Repeated exposure to a food increases the likelihood of acceptance.
3. Start with Single-Ingredient Foods:
When introducing a new food, it’s best to start with single-ingredient options like mashed vegetables or fruits. This helps you easily identify any foods that might cause an adverse reaction.
4. Pay Attention to Texture:
Begin with smooth semi solid/purees or mashed foods, and gradually introduce more textured foods as your baby becomes comfortable with chewing and swallowing.
5. Consider Nutritional Balance:
Make sure the new foods you introduce provide a range of nutrients. Balance fruits and vegetables with protein-rich foods like lentils, beans, or yogurt, and iron-rich foods options like seeds powder, chia seeds etc.
Practical Tips for Introducing New Foods
• Introduce New Foods in the Morning: This allows you to monitor your baby for any reactions throughout the day.
• Offer Familiar Foods Alongside New Ones: Pairing a new food with something your baby already likes can make them more open to trying it.
• Be Patient with Reactions: It’s normal for babies to make faces or seem unsure about new foods. It doesn’t necessarily mean they dislike it; they may just need time to adjust to the new taste or texture.
